AI All the Way Down:
Building Trust into Generative Applications with Model-Based Feedback

Presentation Summary:

Atom icon for The AI Conference 2023, a groundbreaking two-day event on AGI, LLMs, Infrastructure, Alignment, AI Startups, and Neural Architectures.Generative AI promises to unlock unprecedented efficiency and enhance human expertise in collaborative workflows. However, this technology differs from predictive AI in significant ways, and that creates new challenges to safety and reliability. One important difference is that unlike their predictive predecessors, LLMs are trained on general purpose tasks and subsequently applied to different, specific problem spaces. This means that gathering performance feedback and root-causing problems is not as simple as comparing a prediction against a ground-truth label.

Brain icon for The AI Conference 2023, a groundbreaking two-day event on AGI, LLMs, Infrastructure, Alignment, AI Startups, and Neural Architectures. In this talk, we’ll explore closing the feedback loop for generative applications with model-based metrics. At Fiddler AI, we call them “Trust Models” and they’re used both for offline diagnostics and synchronous runtime-path use cases where unsafe or underperforming output is intercepted in real-time.

About | Josh Rubin

Josh Rubin is Principal AI Scientist and a five-year veteran at Fiddler AI, an enterprise AI observability company. Fiddler's platform provides comprehensive and customizable workflows for monitoring, alerting, and root-causing predictive and generative models in production.

Optimizing Quality of Life:
A Feat of Brute Force and Ignorance

Presentation Summary:

Atom icon for The AI Conference 2023, a groundbreaking two-day event on AGI, LLMs, Infrastructure, Alignment, AI Startups, and Neural Architectures.Lat Long Labs (LLL) presents the first of its kind – a platform for optimizing quality of life as a function of location and family. In this talk, we will dive into the technology enabling this breakthrough—a constraint optimization machine running over a multi-grid feature space that unifies hundreds of maps covering the eight dimensions influencing quality of life: wealth, employment, environment, health, education, recreation, community, and safety. These maps are personalized to family structure, zip code, occupation, and personal interests for all locations in the United States. All together, LLL produces one step closer to data science + machine learning + AI achieving the zenith of what tech can offer us: to optimize the quality of life for every family—every individual—every human heartbeat.

Optimizing quality of life is such a daunting task it can only be embarked upon with brute force and ignorance, until enough building blocks are in place for clever optimization algorithms to take over. LLL’s initial building block was the development of a personalized total tax model encoding thousands of tax laws. It was then augmented with a personalized income estimator and continually refined until achieving the first of its kind – a personalized discretionary income model – calculating generation of wealth as a function of family and location. Mastering personalized financial models is critical to making actionable recommendations. The additional seven dimensions similarly had models developed from basic building blocks to novel representations. Finally, using a technique from mathematical optimization, constrained optimization, good at handling high dimensional spaces with soft penalty functions, a global optimization is possible for quality of life as a function of location and family.

Brain icon for The AI Conference 2023, a groundbreaking two-day event on AGI, LLMs, Infrastructure, Alignment, AI Startups, and Neural Architectures.

This talk introduces the architecture underpinning the first known model for simulating and optimizing quality of life as a function of location and family. From this model we show a series of case studies linking the theoretical results of the LLL model with real-life challenges and outcomes for families navigating the dynamic landscape of the United States.

About | Dr June Andrews

In 2024, Dr. June Andrews founded Lat Long Labs to optimize her growing family's quality of life—a complicated mixture of jobs, taxes, weather, healthcare, and, of course, distance to the beach. Since then, Lat Long Labs has grown in scope, helping people decide where to buy homes and providing optimizations for thousands of family types across all zip codes in the US.

Previously, June led the Style Discovery team at Stitch Fix, using data to help guide investments in new inventory. She spearheaded the development of the first real-time ML Monitoring & Diagnostics platform for GE’s airplane engines. Her team’s work has since been extended to turbines in renewable energy and power plants.

Text Revision with Large Language Models -- Challenges and Opportunities

Presentation Summary:

Atom icon for The AI Conference 2023, a groundbreaking two-day event on AGI, LLMs, Infrastructure, Alignment, AI Startups, and Neural Architectures.Text revision is a complex, iterative process. It is no surprise that human writers are unable to simultaneously comprehend multiple demands and constraints of the task of text revision when producing well-written texts, as they are required to cover the content, follow linguistic norms, set the right tone, follow discourse conventions, etc. This presents a massive challenge and opportunity for intelligent writing assistants, which have undergone an enormous shift in their abilities in the past few years and months via large language models and human-feedback learning. In addition to the quality of editing suggestions, writing assistance has undergone a monumental shift in terms of being prescriptive systems to being human-feedback-driven, collaborative systems. However, writing assistants still lack in terms of their quality, personalization, and overall usability, limiting the value they provide to users.

The role of Sparsity in ML

Presentation Summary:

Atom icon for The AI Conference 2023, a groundbreaking two-day event on AGI, LLMs, Infrastructure, Alignment, AI Startups, and Neural Architectures. Our brain executes very sparse computation, allowing for great speed and energy savings. Deep neural networks can also be made to exhibit high levels of sparsity without significant accuracy loss. As their size grows, it is becoming imperative that we use sparsity to improve their efficiency. This is a challenging task because the memory systems and SIMD operations that dominate todays CPUs and GPUs do not lend themselves easily to the irregular data patterns sparsity introduces.

On-Device LLMs: Unleashing the Power of Conversational AI for Mobile and Wearable Devices

Presentation Summary:

Atom icon for The AI Conference 2023, a groundbreaking two-day event on AGI, LLMs, Infrastructure, Alignment, AI Startups, and Neural Architectures.Large Language Models (LLMs) have captured the attention of the tech world with their remarkable common-sense reasoning and generalizability. However, their large size and server transfer requirements can make them resource-intensive and slow, which is problematic for use in mobile or wearable devices like smart glasses and smart watches. Moreover, on-device computing could offer a solution to privacy concerns by keeping sensitive data, such as text messages or photos, on the device itself. To tackle these challenges, we’ve developed a more compact language model, ranging from 0.5B to 1.4B parameters. This model is designed to run on-device, providing a competitive performance for conversational grounded tasks, while also managing latency and memory usage effectively.

Brain icon for The AI Conference 2023, a groundbreaking two-day event on AGI, LLMs, Infrastructure, Alignment, AI Startups, and Neural Architectures.

In this presentation, I’ll delve into our work on creating a versatile, on-device LLM, which is a distilled version of the LLAMA model, specifically tailored for conversational reasoning tasks. I’ll discuss our pretraining framework and our innovative approach to finetuning, which involves using LLM synthesized, task-specific data in a fresh dialogue format. Finally, I’ll share our strategy for scaling our text-based conversational model to a multimodal model, enhancing generative experiences such as composing text replies, document summarization, image captioning, and visual question-answering on wearables or mobile devices.

ALLY: LLM-based Assistive Recommendation

Presentation Summary:

Atom icon for The AI Conference 2023, a groundbreaking two-day event on AGI, LLMs, Infrastructure, Alignment, AI Startups, and Neural Architectures.Large Language Models (LLMs) have demonstrated impressive capabilities for natural language understanding and generation. What if we power recommender systems with LLMs that can reason through user activities on the platform, and can help plan recommendations accordingly? Equipped with UXR insights that people use nuanced language to describe their long-term interest journeys, and they want more user agency in their recommender platforms, we pinpoint a combination of LLMs and personalization as a key ingredient for the next generation of assistive recommendation.

Brain icon for The AI Conference 2023, a groundbreaking two-day event on AGI, LLMs, Infrastructure, Alignment, AI Startups, and Neural Architectures.

In this talk, we will introduce a novel LLM-based journey service that allows to uncover the personalized nuanced user interests, needs and goals of users, i.e., their interest journeys, through fine-tuning and prompt-tuning LLMs. We will discuss research findings from this work on LLMs for better user understanding, and will provide insights on LLM-based long-term planning to assist user journeys. Finally, we will provide challenges and opportunities across our long quest of integrating LLMs into user facing products to transform the user experience.

About | Alex Kayyal

When Alex was growing up in Geneva, Switzerland, as the child of immigrant parents, one thing he learned was to never underestimate the overlooked. “All startups begin as underdogs initially,” he says. “My father was a small business owner, so I witnessed firsthand the immense passion and pride of entrepreneurship, and the sheer level of tenacity and perseverance required to succeed.”

Alex thinks it’s this experience that led him to start a company of his own, which led him down the path to discovering the world of venture capital, and the mentorship of VCs who he still calls friends. “That was the lightbulb moment for me, when I first realized how all my passions could intersect in venture.”

“We also moved around a lot as a family, and I got very comfortable in unfamiliar environments, and learned to keep an open mind,” he says. In some of these moves, “I had a hard time fitting in, but I also learned to navigate and embrace change. I believe this is one of the main reasons that I’ve grown to love identifying and partnering with founders who reject conformity and want to disrupt the status quo as much as I do.

Prior to joining Lightspeed, Alex spent the past 8 years at Salesforce Ventures, starting their fund in Europe and opening their London office before becoming the firm’s Managing Partner, while leading investments in Algolia, Atlan, Gong, Snyk, Salto, Darwinbox, Contentful, Hopin, Front, Miro and Monday, among many others. Alex backed enterprise companies in more than fifteen countries, true to his belief that the next Silicon Valley will be distributed and based in the cloud.

“Having an inside view at the company that arguably pioneered the shift to cloud computing, I’ve learned what best-in-class looks like at scale, and how to recognize the founders and opportunities that have a shot at becoming the next icons of enterprise technology.

At Lightspeed he will focus on leading SaaS investments. “Building successful companies in this space is insanely difficult. Being mission-driven and having clear values are two pillars that make these kinds of journeys possible. I love backing founders who take a values-first approach to leadership, while bringing to bear all the experiences and resources I can to support them along the way.

Before Salesforce, Alex helped found HGP, a venture growth fund where he led the firm’s investment in The Trade Desk. He started his career at Merrill Lynch helping growth companies through M&A and IPOs, and holds a BA from Boston University and an MBA from Harvard Business School.
