Unlocking Relevance with Large Language Models in Search
Presentation Summary:
Improving relevance is the driver of search as it addresses new challenges. Combining keyword search, semantic search, or new search modalities for video and images allows you to deliver better experiences for search users. In the new world of LLMs and generative AI, developers can now take search a step further — we can deeply understand user intent to provide a level of specificity and relevance in responses that’s been unseen before.
In this keynote, Matt will discuss how an open and transparent approach to generative AI helps developers address natural language search challenges. And apply different transformer models most appropriate for a specific use case and level of expertise, while also putting security, privacy, and efficacy at the forefront.

Matt Riley is the former co-founder and CEO of Swiftype, which joined forces with Elastic in October 2017. At Elastic, he is the General Manager of Search and now leads the product management efforts for its suite of search solutions. Elasticsearch is a distributed, free and open search and analytics engine for all types of data, including textual, numerical, geospatial, structured, and unstructured.
Over the last decade, I’ve successfully launched applied ML products across industries in health, gaming, finance, defense, energy, autonomous vehicles, semiconductors, and enterprise tech.
I’ve held product management roles at SambaNova Systems and C3.ai building out ML Platforms and deep learning offerings to enterprise customers. I continue to be an active ML practitioner and was the first data science hire at Uber’s Advanced Technologies Group working on building large scale computer vision and sensor fusion algorithms for self-driving cars.
I’m motivated to help raise the next generation of data scientists and product leaders and have taught and mentored at places like General Assembly, Springboard, and Product School to equip students for their future success. Proud alum of UC Berkeley! Go Bears!
